Each year, Michigan StateUniversity recognizes an outstanding advisor who has been in the field of advising for three years or less. This year’s Outstanding new advisor award is being presented to Justin St. Charles, a Neighborhood Student Success Collaborative (NSSC) advisor in the South Neighborhood.

Justin earned his BA and MSW in Social Work from Michigan State University. Upon graduation, he began his career working as a Bereavement Coordinator for a local hospice, then later he interned with the Michigan State University Counseling Center and with the NSSC’s East Neighborhood while completing his MSW program. Since joining the NSSC in 2016, he has fulfilled the requirements to become a fully-licensed clinical social worker, been named as the advising fellow for the Assessment and Metrics Working Group, named as a community board member for the Core Elements Higher Education Resource Center, elected to serve on the Academic Specialist Advisory Committee, and acts as the faculty advisor for the newly created Making a Memory registered student organization, an organization that engages the community as well-known characters, specifically pediatric floors of hospitals and local libraries.

Since Justin has joined our team he has been helping first and second year students navigate their way through their first few years at Michigan State University. Justin is passionate about student success and always goes the extra mile to ensure students have all the tools that they need to be successful.

One recent student commented that Justin St. Charles “impacted my time at Michigan State and really my life overall.” The student goes on to say, “Our first meeting was about me wanting to transfer. I would say he has opened my eyes to so many things at State, but I think the proper wording would be to say that he has truly changed my view. I thank him for investing his time and life into mine, it truly means so much. To be able to know I have someone as positive, encouraging, supportive and real on my team is a feeling that is unmatched.”

When Dr. Genyne L. Royal, Assistant Dean for Student Success Initiatives and Director of Neighborhood Student Success Initiatives, hired Justin, she knew that he was going to make a difference. Dr. Royal stated, “Justin started with the NSSC as a graduate student and it has been an absolute pleasure watching him grow as a professional and leader within our MSU community.” She goes on to say, “the manner in which he is able to engage with students in advising sessions and across campus is as equal to his ability to engage faculty and staff. He is certainly worthy of this honor and I am grateful to have him as both a colleague and friend in the NSSC.”

Congratulations to Justin St. Charles on this impressive award!
