Reading Skills

An Advisor's Top Three Suggestions:

  1. Balance and organize your reading.  If you are not astrong reader, do not take too many courses in the same semester that have heavy reading requirements.Put your reading assignments on your calendar and plan to read “X” amount each day before the lecture or assignment due date.
  2. Adjust your reading pace and style to the content. Reading fiction for a literature class requires different techniques than reading a textbook for a social science or science class.
  3. Set aside a quiet, comfortable reading spot and develop a “system” for reading in which you consistently evaluate what you are reading to check your comprehension and ensure that you are learning the material. The SQ3R method in the websites below is one of the most popular.
