Work with an academic success coach!

An academic success coach is assigned to every student/TRIO Scholar accepted into the program. Your coach will be a fellow undergraduate student who is a sophomore student or higher. Their role is to assist you along your journey during bimonthly appointments. Academic Success Coaching is designed to help you achieve your goals during each appointment with your coach. You will create new goals and action plans to achieve throughout the semester. Consider some of the questions below as you prepare for your appointment.

Before your first appointment consider:

  • What questions do you have about the coaching process and meeting with your coach?
  • What would maximize the coaching experience for you? What would a successful appointment look like for you today? (Share this with your coach!)
  • What goals would you like to achieve with the support of your coach? For example, here are past goals that other scholars have worked on with their coach:
    • Creating a time management system that works for you and your schedule
    • Determining a study routine for semester exams
    • Identifying learning techniques that are most effective for you
    • Creating a plan for finding academic opportunities (research, study abroad, etc.) or getting connected to other relevant campus resources
    • Setting goals and creating structure to meet those goals

When returning for a follow-up appointment, reflect on the following:

  • How was your week? How have you been since your last appointment?
  • Have you made progress on any goals or action items for the week? What helped you to make progress this week? Were there any areas where you struggled to make progress?
  • What goals would you like to focus on for the upcoming week?

Maximize the value of your coaching session

Remember, TRIO Coaching is designed for YOU.

If the conversation is not going in a direction that feels useful, feel free to let your coach know you’d like to move in a different direction.

Take notes during your session so you can capture ideas you’ve brainstormed and have a list of action items to complete during the week.

During the week, keep these notes handy and refer to them to keep you on track with your planned action items.
