Neighborhood Student Success Center (NSSC)

Neighborhood Model

Neighborhood Model

Michigan State University is one of the biggest college campuses in the nation, it spans 5,200 acres. Due to its size, MSU piloted the Neighborhoods concept in 2010. The concept was to divide the University into five Neighborhoods in order to make the campus seem smaller. The Neighborhoods were designed to meet the needs of residents within walking distance to where they live. They were created to help students succeed and thrive as a Spartan. Each Neighborhood has an Engagement Center, that are unique spaces that serve as the main access points to important resources such as academic advisors, tutors, health practitioners and other resources to help students navigate through their college career.

The Neighborhood Student Success Center (NSSC) is an innovative and collaborative organization of experts driving Michigan State University to continually improve the services, practices, and activities for holistic student success. The NSSC promotes academic proficiency, institutional navigation and socio-emotional engagement to promote student success. Our unit is committed to empowering undergraduate students to pursue knowledge, access resources, and develop skills needed for success. Our goals align with the broader institution goals of closing opportunity gaps for underserved (first generation, low-income, Black, Latinx, and/or Native American/Indigenous) students by increasing persistence, retention and graduation rates, and decreasing time to degree
