5 Tips for Transfer Student Success at MSU

There are many excellent tips for success as a transfer student at MSU but below are 5 tips that we recommend as you transition to MSU.

All of you have experience at another institution, whether you just took one class or two years or more of coursework. Some of you might be bringing life experiences with you, worked full time before coming here or currently work full time. All your experiences are valuable to us here at MSU and we view them as an assets. We are fortunate to have you here!

Visit their office hours. These are times when professors are available in their office expressly for the purpose of meeting with students. Bring questions, go over assignment, seek feedback or simply stop by to get to know them better. Times should be listed in your syllabus.
Be sure to share with then that you are a transfer student and that you are new to MSU. Sometimes people may forget or assume that students in a course have been at MSU for some time and might know certain things already. Ask them if there are any resources you should utilize or take advantage of as a student at MSU.

Explore majors and minors
Learn about opportunities within majors and discuss career options
Discuss academic skills, such as time management, reviewing syllabi, etc.
Plan your schedule or drop & add classes
Learn about campus resources
Discuss situations with them that may impact your academics (ex. If you have a family or medical emergency)

Build a support team around you. This may include professors, Neighborhood Directors, Advisors and even peers. Of course, your success team may also include family, caregivers and those that have been a part of your support system prior to your transition to MSU
Build and maintain relationships with your college and other departments you utilize on a regular basis. Demonstrate initiative to meet people and follow-up with them.

There many campus activities and organizations to help you learn and explore, including MRULE (Multiracial Unity Living Experience), OCAT (Office of Cultural and Academic Transitions), Gender and Sexuality Campus Center, OISS (Office of International Students and Scholars), Neighborhood based caucuses, etc.
Attend cultural events. They are open to all and they welcome your participation!
MSU has students from every county in Michigan, every state in the country and over 130 countries. This is the best time to meet people who are different than you!
Spend time getting to know people on your floor and in your classes. It takes time to make MSU feel like home.
